Introduction to User Environment Manager

VMware User Environment Manager is being renamed to VMware Dynamic Environment Manager - watch for more news at VMworld 2019!

VMware User Environment Manager delivers personalization and centrally managed policy configurations across virtual, physical, and cloud-based Windows desktop environments. IT administrators control which settings users are allowed to personalize, and administrators can map environmental settings such as network drives and location-specific printers.

User-specific Windows desktop and application settings can be applied in the context of client device, location, or other conditions. Policies are enforced when users log in, launch an app, reconnect, or when some other triggering event occurs.

User Environment Manager also has a feature for configuring folder redirection for storing personal user data, including documents, pictures, and so on.

Deploy and configure User Environment Manager server-side components. This module will cover creation of management components including GPO, NoAD config file, and more.

This Module contains the following lessons:

  • Lesson 1 - Create the User Environment Manager Configuration Share
  • Lesson 2 - Create the User Environment Manager Profile Archives Share
  • Lesson 3 - Configure the User Environment Manager Console
  • Lesson 4 - Enable Easy Start
  • Lesson 5 - Configure User Environment Manager with a Group Policy Object
  • Lesson 6 - Configure User Environment Manager with NoAD Mode

Purpose of this Module

The purpose of this module is to introduce you to the components and concepts necessary to conduct a successful User Environment Manager proof-of-concept.

In this module you will deploy and configure User Environment Manager, learning about multiple options for controlling agent behavior.

This module focuses on the installation and configuration of User Environment Manager. If you would like to get hands on with additional features, uses cases, and more, consider taking the User Environment Manager module of VMware Horizon 7 Desktop Virtualization with Just in Time Management

Installation Versus Configuration

One of the benefits of User Environment Manager is its simple architecture that requires very little infrastructure to build and scale. Unlike many applications, User Environment Manager has no dedicated server or database. The management console, used to administer the application, and the agent, which runs on Windows desktop or server guest OSs, are both installed using a small Microsoft Installer (MSI) file.
