Horizon Cloud Overview

In this Module, we describe the basic functionalities of Horizon Cloud on IBM Cloud and the high-level Architecture and integrated services in the platform.

Overview

The VMware Horizon Cloud Service on IBM Cloud delivers feature-rich virtual desktops and applications using a purpose-built cloud platform that is scalable across multiple deployment options, including fully managed infrastructure from VMware, on IBM Cloud. The service supports a cloud-scale architecture that makes it easy to deliver virtualized Windows desktops and applications to any device, anytime. And, with a flexible subscription model, organizations can easily get up and running and scale quickly.

Horizon Cloud on IBM Cloud simplifies the delivery of Windows desktops and applications as a cloud service. IT can save time and money, without sacrificing enterprise requirements for security and control and end users are more productive, with a complete workspace they can access from any device, anywhere.

Horizon Cloud Service on IBM Cloud enables a risk-free, incremental evolution of the next-generation workspace. It provides a complete virtual workspace from the cloud, delivering desktops and hosted apps as an easily managed, integrated cloud service while leveraging the power of IBM Cloud. Enterprises can rapidly provision desktops and applications to users on any device, anywhere. And virtual desktops are transformed from the CapEx outlay inherent in enterprise on-premises desktop virtualization and physical PC refreshes, into a predictable, easy to budget OpEx item.

Financial Reasons for Leveraging Horizon Cloud on IBM Cloud

Traditional desktop and application virtualization is costly and time-consuming to implement. It generally requires specialized IT expertise to set up. With traditional desktop and application virtualization, organizations need to purchase infrastructure for both hosting desktops and apps, as well as management infrastructure.

Moving to Horizon Cloud on IBM Cloud gives organizations the opportunity to move from a CapEx model to an OpEx model with predictable economics. The Horizon Cloud on IBM Cloud solution is a simple, yet flexible and scalable solution that enables organizations to choose where virtual desktops and apps reside, on-premises or in the cloud, or both, all while being managed by a centralized cloud control plane.

Horizon Cloud Concept and Capabilities

With Horizon Cloud, management is in the cloud, but organizations can choose where desktops and apps reside. Horizon Cloud requires less IT expertise and takes less time to set up than traditional desktop and application solutions. Horizon Cloud is available using an OPEX model with subscription-based pricing for more predictable economics.  The Horizon Cloud service makes it easy for organizations to move between deployment models using a single user license.

For organizations leveraging Horizon Cloud, workspaces are hosted by VMware in the public cloud. This model simplifies the delivery of desktops and apps as a service. This option is great for organizations who might not have desktop and application virtualization expertise. It is ideal for organizations that have cloud-first initiatives and who want subscription pricing.

Benefits of Horizon Cloud on IBM Cloud

Cost and complexity redefined.  Horizon Cloud on IBM Cloud radically transforms traditional desktop and application virtualization with a predictable cost model that lets you pay as you grow.

Comprehensive Desktop-as-a-Service Solution. Horizon Cloud on IBM Cloud gives you incredible flexibility in deploying cloud-hosted virtual Windows desktops and applications. Choose from dedicated or floating desktops and hosted applications to meet the needs of your diverse workforce. And with easily configurable capacity from VMware, you can now control desktop specifications at time of deployment instead of buying preset models up front.

Fastest Time-to-Value. Cloud-hosted infrastructure from IBM Cloud lets you add capacity in days not months, helping you get new users up and running faster than traditional on-premises VDI deployments. And with integrated technologies like Dynamic Environment Manager and Instant Clones, youll be able to deliver desktops and applications to users in minutes.

Predictable Economics. Horizon Cloud on IBM Cloud offers a true subscription pricing model that allows you to pay as you grow, eliminating the time consuming and often difficult task of sizing your environment up front and helping you avoid costly capital investments.

Horizon Cloud Deployment Options

Horizon comes in these different flavors.

  • On-Premises Infrastructure
  • Horizon Cloud on VMware Cloud on AWS
  • Horizon Cloud on IBM Cloud
  • BYO Public Cloud

Horizon Cloud on IBM Cloud Architecture

Horizon Cloud on IBM Cloud provides each customer with dedicated hardware to run desktop or apps workload, this is called the tenant. The "tenant" configuration can be different depending on the use case the customer wants to address.

There are two different option to setup the tenant either connect via different network options (VPN, MPLS, Network Exchnage) to the customer AD/DNS/DHCP infrastructure where all capabilities of the customer can be leveraged. The other option is the so call Island Mode were the operations team build the tenant with AD/DNS/DHCP build on the utility server inside the tenant, therefore there is no connection to the customer infrastructure.

The most common setup is the connection to the customer infrastructure via a network connection.

Horizon Cloud functionality included in the Service

Dynamic Environment Manager (DEM)

Dynamic Environment Manager is also part of the service in one of the Modules you will learn how to setup and configure DEM for Horizon Cloud on the Utility Server.

Radius, RSA and VMware verify integration

Horizon Cloud on IBM Cloud offers also platform integration of Radius services, RSA Secure ID as well as VMware Verify integration through Workspace One. This provides closer integration in to different 2FA methods for the user and easier setup in the Cloud Management GUI.

In this lab you will do a setup and configuration of a Horizon Cloud on IBM Cloud . Interactive Simulations are used when required for lack of time within a lab environment.  This lab focuses on configuring a Horizon Cloud on IBM Cloud environment.

The steps that you will be executing include:

  • Initial Tenant setup and configuration
  • Administration Console Overview
  • Publishing of desktops
  • Desktop management
  • Management of applications
  • Management of User Environment Settings
  • Integration of Workspace One with Horizon Cloud on IBM Cloud
