Updating an AppStack

In this lesson, you will be adding a new application to an existing AppStack.  

Introduction to Updating an AppStack

The VMware App Volumes update feature makes a copy of an existing AppStack, and allows you to add more applications, update current applications, or make any other changes to the newly copied AppStack. The original AppStack still exists, and is unaffected by the changes to the copy.  

Launch Google Chrome

 

  1. Click on the Google Chrome shortcut located on your desktop

Login to vCenter

 

  1. Confirm you are on the vSphere Client login page
  2. Click box Use Windows session authentication
  3. Click Login

Note:  If you are not on the vCenter login page in Chrome, click on the vCenter shortcut folder, then select the RegionA vSphere Client (HTML) shortcut.

Prepare Provisioning VM

To ensure a clean provisioning VM, you will revert this image to the previous Snapshot.

  1. Right click on the base-w10-1709-x64-01 VM
  2. Select Snapshots
  3. Click on Revert to Latest Snapshot

Revert Snapshot

  1. Click on Yes to confirm that you want to revert to the latest snapshot

Power On VM

  1. Right click on base-w10-1709-x64-01
  2. Select Power
  3. Click on Power On

Login to App Volumes Manager

 Login to the App Volumes Manager.

  1. Select a new tab in Chrome
  2. Select the AppVolumes folder
  3. Click on AppVol-01
  4. Enter Username:  administrator
  5. Enter Password:  VMware1!
  6. Click on Login

Navigate to the AppStack

To view the AppStacks that reside in this environment:

  1. Click on Volumes
  2. Confirm you are on the AppStacks tab
  3. Click on the + sign next to Utilities

Review Existing AppStack

 

  1. Click on the Arrow next to Applications. The three Applications that reside in this AppStack are listed.
  2. Click on the x to close the pop up window

Update AppStack

Updating an AppStack creates a copy of the original AppStack.  

  1. Click on Update to begin the process

Enter AppStack Information

Now you will enter the information used to create a copy of the existing AppStack

  1. Confirm the storage is listed as:  vcsa-01a.corp.local: [RegionA01] ESX04a-Local
  2. For Description enter:  Add 7-Zip
  3. Click Update

Confirm Update

  1. Click on Update

Start the Provisioning Process

Start the provisioning process:

  1. Click on the refresh button
  2. Click on the + next to the Utilities-update
  3. Click on Provision

Search for Provisioning Virtual Machine

Enter the information of the provisioning VM that will be used to update the Utilities AppStack.  

  1. Type base in the search box
  2. Click on Search
  3. Select and click the radio button next to CORP\BASE-W10-X64-01$
  4. Click Provision

Confirm Provisioning

  1. Click on Start Provisioning to begin the process
  1. Click on the vSphere tab
  2. Click on base-w10-1709-x64-01
  3. Click on Launch Web Console

Login to Provisioning VM

  1. Click on Ctrl+Alt+Delete
  2. Enter User name: [email protected]
  3. Password: VMware1!

Note:  The login may take a couple minutes to complete.

Confirm Provisioning Mode

Do NOT click on OK until after the you have installed the application.  

Open Windows Explorer

  1. Click on the folder icon to launch Windows Explorer from the provisioning VM

Navigate to Application

  1. Type \\controlcenter in the address bar, and press Enter
  2. Open the 7-Zip Folder

Launch Application

  1. Click on 7-zip_19.00-x64.exe

Install Application

  1. Click on Install

Close Installer

  1. Click on Close to complete the installation

Close Windows Explorer

  1. Click on the X to close Windows Explorer

Complete the Capture Process

  1. Click OK

Confirm Installation is Complete

  1. Click Yes

Confirm Reboot

A reboot of the provisioning VM will complete the capture process

  1. Click OK

 

Sign into Provisioning Virtual Machine

The login screen may take a few minutes to appear due to latency in the lab.

  1. Once the reboot is complete, click on Send Ctrl+Alt+Delete
  2. Type [email protected]
  3. VMware1! as the password, press Enter

Provisioning Complete

  1. Click OK to confirm the provisioning process was successful

Return to App Volumes Manager

  1. Click the App Volumes Manager browser tab

Confirm the AppStack is Provisioned

  1. Click on the refresh button
  2. Expand the Utilities-update AppStack
  3. You should now see 7-Zip listed as your fourth application

 At this point the AppStack is ready for assignment.  When deploying an updated AppStack, be sure to unassigned the original AppStack before assigning the updated version.

Close Google Chrome

  1. Click on the X to close Google Chrome
