Testing High Availability

You have finalized the configuration of the Unified Access Gateway High Availability component, now is time to test.

In this chapter, you will access the intranet website through Unified Access Gateway first, shutdown the Master appliance and test the access to the intranet website again, which should go through the Backup appliance in the cluster.

 

1. Accessing the Intranet website

Intranet access through Reverse Proxy
  1. In Google Chrome, click on the New Tab button to open a new tab.
  2. Enter https://uag-vip.corp.local/intranet in the address bar and press Enter.
    NOTE - uagvip.corp.local resolves to 192.168.110.150, which is the floating Virtual IP Address (VIP) on the Master Unified Access Gateway that you configured earlier when setting up High Availability on both unified access gateway appliances.

The result is a sample intranet page hosted on an internal IIS Server.

2. Power OFF UAG-HA1 Appliance

Shutdown VM

Return to the vSphere Web Client and Power OFF the UAG-HA1 VM.

  1. Click on VM and Templates.
  2. Click the UAG-HA1 VM.
  3. Click on ACTIONS.
  4. Hover over the Power option.
  5. Click on Power Off.
  6. Click Yes to confirm Power Off action for UAG-HA1.

Wait for the UAG-HA1 complete shutdown.  This will trigger the Backup unified access gateway appliance in the cluster to become the Master appliance.

3. Accessing the Intranet website after UAG-HA1 power off

  1. Click on the New Tab button to open a new tab.
  2. Enter https://uag-vip.corp.local/intranet in the address bar and press Enter.

The same intranet webpage should show up, without any disruption for the user, however the traffic now is going through the UAG-HA2.

4. Validating UAG-HA2 High Availability status

Return to UAG-HA2 console administration tab (https://uag-ha2-intranet.corp.local:9443/admin), it should still be open in Google Chrome.

UAG-HA2 is now set as the Master appliance, and as consequence of that the Virtual IP Address is assigned to it.

NOTE - If the High Availability Settings does not show UAG-HA2 as the Master appliance, refresh the page. Note, you will have to re-authenticate into the UAG administration console. Enter admin for the username and VMware1! for the password.

  1. Return to UAG-HA2 console administration tab (https://uag-ha2-intranet.corp.local:9443/admin), it should still be open in Google Chrome.
  2. Click the Refresh button under General Settings.
  3. Confirm that UAG-HA2 is now set as the Master appliance. As a result, the Virtual IP Address of 192.168.110.150 will be assigned to it.

5. Validating Virtual IP Address on the UAG-HA2 Virtual Machine

Check UAG-HA2 VM

Return to the vSphere Web Client to validate the assignment of the additional Virtual IP Address to the Master Appliance.

  1. Click on VM and Templates.
  2. Select UAG-HA2 VM.
  3. Click the Refresh button.
  4. Click on View all 3 IP addresses.
  5. The Virtual IP address 192.168.110.150 is now assigned to the UAG-HA2, the Master appliance.

NOTE - If UAG-HA2 was still selected from when you last left vSphere, you may need to refresh the page to see the IP Addresses update properly.

This confirms that when the Master unified access gateway appliance was taken offline, the Backup unified access gateway appliance was promoted to Master and assigned the 192.168.110.150 virtual IP (uag-vip.corp.local) and access to the intranet resource was uninterrupted.
